APEC Symposium on Total Supply Chain
Press Release: July 13, 2006
APEC Symposium on Total Supply Chain
Alliance has been invited as one of the Hong Kong representatives to joint 1st Total Supply Chain Security Symposium organized by Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) from 6 – 7 July 2006 in Singapore. We believe that it is an excellent start to view supply chain security issues in a holistic, integrated and strategic approach.
Wide Coverage
The symposium included more than 20 speakers from government agencies including representatives from the United States, United Kingdom, European Union, New Zealand, Canada and China. Senior industry figures from companies including Sony, IBM, APL, Siemens and Federal Express also presented the business perspective on regional supply chain security issues and the future improvements that they felt were required. More than 350 policymakers, government officials (Hong Kong, Australia, Vietnam, Philippines, Britain, Mexico, Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Korea, etc.) and private sector representatives, such as UPS, Unisys, Cosco, Motorola, NYK Group, Panalpina, Princewaterhouse Coopers, Shell, etc., attended the event.
The APEC Symposium on Total Supply Chain Security covered a range of topical issues relating to threats and vulnerabilities in the global supply chain, benefits of supply chain security to facilitating trade and business, perspectives from governments, private sectors and international organizations, as well as the challenges for the future. Delegates exchanged views and information on best practices for implementation in their economies and companies. All these are valuable contributions to APEC’s common endeavor of attaining stability, sustainable development and prosperity through the promotion of trade and investment.
Supply Chain Power of Asia-Pacific Region
The issue of effectively safeguarding supplies chains both in the Asia-Pacific region as well as worldwide has become increasingly important. According to APEC’s information, APEC, with 21 member economies, represents the most economically dynamic region accounting for 40% of world population, 56% of world GDP and 48% of world trade. APEC member economies depend heavily on the efficiency of supply chains to fuel their long lasting and high rate of economic growth. As most of the world’s largest seaports and busiest airports are located in APEC economies, ensuring the stability, security and efficiency of supply chains has become an issue of vital significance for APEC.
The Executive Director of the APEC Secretariat, Ambassador Tran Trong Toan, stated the core importance of supply chain security in Asia-Pacific, “With the increased trade flows, protecting the sea, land and air lanes that transport goods and materials has become crucial for stability in the global economy.”
Cooperation of Public & Private Sector
Through discussions and cooperations amongst different parties in various countries, we look forward for a comprehensive and sustainable regional custom policy for ensuring supply chain security. Singapore’s Deputy Prime Minister, Professor S Jayakumar, identified some of the threats and areas of vulnerability in regional supply chains in his keynote speech,
“Whether we are public or private sector, we all have a stake in keeping this supply chain intact.”
